Energy Meter
Reframing everyday objects as future artifacts
Speculative Design Futures
Object: The Light Bulb
Light bulbs remind us of the life changing invention of electricity. They allow us to control when we work or how we live. I’m reminded of ‘New York the city that never sleeps’.
Artifact: A home energy meter which indicates the level of energy rations remaining on your neighbourhood street so people can adjust their usage accordingly.
Reflection: After decades of having energy at our beck and call with the flick of a switch . . now we must work within the rations we have been allocated. We could not reduce our usage and so it has been reduced for us and whilst this has shaped our lives considerably, not all of it . . is as bad you might think.
Consider : what might be gained by thinking about how we would ration / allocate / use energy in this way? What behaviours might change? what new rituals might emerge?
